How to roll up story points to an epic in Jira

Updated September 24, 2026

Open an epic in Jira and you’ll see its own fields and a basic child-issue count — but not the sum of its stories’ story points, and not a “62% of the points are done” number. Jira keeps each issue’s estimate to itself; it does not roll child estimates up to the parent. For anyone reporting on an epic, that’s the number that’s missing. Here’s how to get it.

What Jira gives you natively

  • The epic issue’s own Child issues panel shows how many child issues are done vs. total — useful, but it’s a count, so a one-point chore and a thirteen-point story weigh the same, with no way to switch it to points.
  • A company-managed Scrum board’s Backlog Epic panel is the one native exception: set the board’s Estimation Statistic (Board settings → Estimation) to Story Points, and that one bar becomes point-weighted. It’s sidebar-only, Scrum + company-managed only, and still doesn’t touch sub-tasks.
  • The epic’s own Story Points field is just a field you can type into. It is not a sum of its children. Setting it to 40 doesn’t mean the stories underneath add up to 40.
  • Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps, part of Jira Premium and Enterprise) does do hierarchy rollups — sum of estimates, progress by points — across the plan. If you’re already on Premium and living in Plans, that’s the native answer.

So if you’re on Free or Standard, or you want the number on the issue rather than inside a separate Plans view or a board sidebar, you’re doing it by hand — or adding a tool.

The manual way (and why it doesn’t last)

You can open the epic, list its stories, and add up the points in your head or a spreadsheet. It’s accurate exactly once. The moment estimates change, a story is added, or a sub-task is closed, the number is stale — and nobody trusts a progress figure they have to recompute. Rollups are only useful if they’re live.

The rollup-app way

A dedicated rollup app computes the aggregate on the issue, live. This is what Tally does: open a parent and see child and sub-task status, story-point and % complete rolled up across the whole epic → story → sub-task tree — no dashboard to build, no formulas to maintain.

What you get beyond the native count:

  • Points and estimate, not just count — “21 of 34 story points done (62%)” and “25h of 40h” alongside the issue tally, so progress is weighted by size.
  • The whole tree — it follows the hierarchy down through every level and resolves it to one trustworthy number on the parent, so nested sub-tasks aren’t missed.
  • On the issue, zero config — the answer appears on the parent the moment it loads; there’s nothing to configure and no dashboard to keep alive.
  • No plan upgrade — you get point and % rollups without moving the whole site to Premium for Plans, and without touching board settings.

Which should you use?

  • Already on Premium and working in Plans? Use the native rollups there.
  • Running a company-managed Scrum board? Flip its Estimation Statistic to Story Points for a free point-weighted bar — just know it only shows in the backlog sidebar, not on the issue.
  • Just need the count? The native epic progress bar is fine.
  • On Free/Standard, or you want story-point and % rollups right on the issue without a dashboard? A rollup app like Tally is the direct route — see an accurate epic progress bar and percent complete on an epic.

The test is simple: if the number people ask for is “how far along is this epic, by points” and Jira makes you compute it by hand, that’s exactly the gap a rollup tool closes.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jira automatically sum story points from stories up to the epic?
No. In standard Jira Cloud the epic's Story Points field is its own value — it does not aggregate the points of its child stories or sub-tasks. A company-managed Scrum board can show a point-weighted bar in its Backlog Epic panel if its Estimation Statistic is set to Story Points, but that's sidebar-only. For a number on the issue, use Plans (Premium/Enterprise, formerly Advanced Roadmaps) or a rollup app.
How do I see an epic's percent complete in Jira?
Jira shows a simple child-issue progress bar on the epic, by count, not points. To get "% complete by points" on the issue itself you need Plans (Premium/Enterprise) or a Marketplace rollup app; a company-managed Scrum board's Backlog panel can show points too, but only in the sidebar.
What's the difference between counting issues and rolling up points?
Counting is "5 of 8 child issues done." Rolling up points is "21 of 34 story points done (62%)" — it weights each issue by its estimate, which is usually the number stakeholders actually care about.
Do I need Jira Premium to roll up story points?
Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps, which does hierarchy rollups) is a Premium/Enterprise feature. On Standard or Free, a company-managed Scrum board's Estimation Statistic can get you a points-weighted bar in the backlog sidebar — but not on the issue. A dedicated rollup app gets you there without upgrading your whole site.
