How to create issue templates in Jira

Updated September 24, 2026

“Issue template” sounds like it should be a Jira setting. It isn’t. Jira Cloud has no native way to save an issue as a reusable template and create new issues from it on demand — the closest built-in options are an Automation rule that fills in a description or field after the issue exists, admin-level field defaults, and cloning. None of those give a person a pick-a-template moment on the Create screen. So teams raising the same kind of work again and again — bug reports, release checklists, onboarding, incident reviews — end up re-typing fields, copying from a Confluence page, or cloning last time’s issue and cleaning it up. Here’s what’s actually available.

What Jira gives you natively

  • Default description — not a plain toggle. There’s no simple “set a default description” setting, particularly in company-managed projects. The usual route is an Automation rule that fills the description in once the issue is created — so it isn’t actually pre-filled while you’re looking at the Create screen — or a Marketplace app. It’s the closest native-ish thing to a template, and it still only reaches the description field.
  • Field configuration defaults. Some fields can have default values via configuration, but this is admin-level, global to the field context, and not a “pick a template” experience for the person creating the issue.
  • Automation for Jira. A rule can create issues with preset values when something triggers it (e.g. “when a release is created, make these tasks”). That covers template-on-event, but not let me create from this template on demand, and multi-issue trees are awkward to build in a rule.
  • Clone. You can clone an existing issue as a starting point — handy, but it carries stale values and there’s no curated “template” to clone from.

For a single field or an event-driven case, the native options are fine. For “give everyone a consistent, multi-field, maybe multi-issue starting point they can create on demand,” you’re re-doing work by hand.

The template-app way

A templates app fills exactly this gap. Prefab lets you define a template once — fields, description, labels, and even a whole epic → story → sub-task tree — and then pre-fills the native Create screen or scaffolds the entire structure in one click.

What that gets you:

  • Real field pre-fill on the native Create screen — not just the description, but issue type, priority, labels, components and required custom fields, so people fill in only what’s genuinely different this time.
  • Whole hierarchies in one click — a release checklist or onboarding epic becomes one action instead of creating and re-parenting a dozen issues by hand.
  • Consistency without training — the template is the standard, so new team members raise well-formed issues without knowing your conventions.

Choosing an approach

The Jira issue-templates category is unusually fragmented — there’s no single dominant app, and several small vendors do it well, so it’s worth comparing a few issue-template apps against your exact need:

  • Just need a consistent description? An Automation rule that fills it in on creation gets you most of the way, no app required.
  • Template on an event (release, schedule)? Automation for Jira, or a recurring-issues app if it repeats on a cadence.
  • On-demand, multi-field, or multi-issue templates people create themselves? A dedicated templates app like Prefab is the direct fit — the same idea extends to sub-task templates and whole epic → story → sub-task trees.

If you find yourself typing the same fields into new issues more than a couple of times a week, that’s the signal a template tool will pay for itself in re-typed effort alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does Jira have built-in issue templates?
Not really. Jira Cloud has no native "save this issue as a template and create from it" feature. The closest built-in options are an Automation rule that sets a description or field values once the issue exists, and cloning an existing issue — neither is a true on-demand template. For reusable, multi-field or multi-issue templates you use a Marketplace app.
Can I set a default description for a Jira issue type?
Not as a plain setting — Jira Cloud doesn't offer a native "default description" toggle, especially in company-managed projects. Teams typically add an Automation rule that fills the description once the issue is created, or use a Marketplace app to pre-fill it on the Create screen itself.
How do I create a whole epic with stories and sub-tasks from a template?
Natively you'd create each issue and link them by hand every time. A template app like Prefab lets you define the epic → story → sub-task tree once and scaffold the whole structure in one click, with fields pre-filled.
Can Automation for Jira act as templates?
Automation can create issues with preset field values when something triggers it, which covers some "template on event" cases. It's not an on-demand "create from this template now" experience, and building a multi-issue tree in a rule is fiddly.
